Several technical options were considered and modelled by Evonic. The chosen solution comprised 5 x Mitsubishi CAHV 500 air to water heat pumps providing a total thermal output of 225kW used to heat the pool and communal areas. A Mitsubishi QAHV 40 kW high temperature CO2 heat pump provides hot water for the changing room showers and other domestic hot water requirements. The existing gas fired boiler system was retained to provide residual top up heat in winter peak conditions, as well as back-up / resilience if required.
A new bespoke controls system ensures performance of the heat pumps is optimised according to heat demand and external temperatures. This system will also enable the assets to be operated commercially (i.e., linked to the price of electricity) to facilitate further cost reductions and efficiencies.
150 kWp roof mounted solar PV array provides renewable electricity. LED lighting compliments the energy efficiency measures applied to this project.
The works were carried out over a ten-week period, with the facility only being closed for three days during the final commissioning and changeover elements, minimising disruption to the leisure centre and the public.
